The Bicycle Maintenance and On-the-Ride Repairs Course
This hands-on, one-day course is designed for bike enthusiasts who want to better understand how their bicycle works and gain the skills to maintain it with confidence. Throughout the day, you'll be guided step-by-step through a full Level 2 tune-up on your own bike, learning valuable techniques and insights as you go. We'll cover everything from effective workshop habits to precise derailleur and brake adjustments, wheel removal, flat repair, drivetrain removal and reinstallation, as well as how to properly clean and lubricate your bike. A homemade lunch is provided to keep you fueled up. Whether you're preparing for long rides or just want to keep your bike in top shape, this course will give you the knowledge to tackle maintenance and on-the-go repairs like a pro.
Advanced Mechanic Course
If you want to learn the A–Z of bicycle mechanics, this is the course for you. Many of our own mechanics—including our Head Mechanic, John, who trained in England in 2014, and senior mechanic Ken, who traveled to Toronto for a similar advanced course—have taken training like this to get where they are today. Offered exclusively at the K2O School of Bicycle Mechanics, this is (as far as we know) the only in-depth course of its kind in Ottawa. Delivered by John himself, this professional program is taught inside a fully-equipped, purpose-built workshop at 175 Helen Rapp Way (Google: K2O School of Bicycle Mechanics). The full course is broken down into 10 intensive one-day modules, running Monday to Friday, 9:00am to 4:30pm, over two consecutive weeks. Each day features a homemade lunch and expert-led instruction in a small-group setting.
Course Modules:
- 1: Foundations & Derailleur Systems
- 2: Chains, Cassettes & Hubs
- 3: Brakes
- 4: Headsets, Bottom Brackets & Cranks
- 5: Bike Builds & Cabling (includes end-of-week test)
- 6: Hydraulic Systems
- 7: Wheel Building
- 8: Frame Tools & Extraction Methods
- 9: Suspension Systems
- 10: Service Operations & Small Business Models
Whether you're aiming to become a professional mechanic or simply want to master your craft, this course will take you from the basics to advanced systems with confidence.
Wheel Building
If you’ve ever wanted to build your own wheels—whether for a custom bike build or simply for the satisfaction of mastering this craft—this course is your chance to learn how. You'll be guided through the entire wheel building process, from lacing spokes to finishing and truing the wheel.
Beyond wheel building itself, the course offers a comprehensive overview of wheels and tires, including:
- Tire sizing and compatibility
- Rim and tire width matching
- Flat repair techniques
- Wheel repairs
- Tubeless tire setup
This one-day course is delivered at the K2O School of Bicycle Mechanics, located at 175 Helen Rapp Way (search K2O School of Bicycle Mechanics on Google Maps). It’s led by our Head Mechanic, John, inside a professional-grade workshop purpose-built for bicycle mechanic training.
The course runs from 9:00 AM to 4:30 PM, and includes a homemade lunch to keep you fuelled throughout the day.
